Antalya in October 2026: Weather, Sea Temperature and Can You Swim?

On the Mediterranean coast, summer does not end the moment the calendar declares it over. In Antalya, once the sharp heat of August withdraws, what remains is the warmth the sea has stored throughout the season. That is precisely what October is: a short and privileged window in which the land begins to cool while the water still speaks of summer.

Two questions reach us more often than any others at this time of year: is Antalya worth visiting in October, and can you still swim in October? The answer to both lies not in opinion but in measured data. In this guide we set out the picture clearly, from the first day of the month to the last, drawing on the Turkish State Meteorological Service's 1991-2020 long-term averages together with sea temperature records.

Antalya in October: What the Numbers Say

In October, daytime temperatures on the Antalya coast average 27.3 °C, while night-time temperatures settle at around 15.9 °C. The sea holds a band of 25-26 °C. Sunshine amounts to 7.5 hours a day. On the rainfall side, the month records an average of 4.9 rainy days and approximately 76 millimetres of precipitation. This picture sits comfortably above a typical Northern European summer.

The figures acquire meaning when placed alongside the neighbouring months. In September the daytime average is 31.7 °C and the sea 27-28 °C. By November the daytime figure falls to 21.6 °C and the sea to 21-22 °C, while rainfall rises to 152 millimetres, roughly double that of October. October is the month that holds the balance between these two extremes: it retains much of the comfort of summer without yet carrying the weight of autumn.

Can You Swim in October? A Straight Answer

You can. There is nothing evasive about the answer to this question. Throughout October, sea temperatures along the Side and Alanya coast do not fall below 24 °C. The monthly average is 25-26 °C, and that figure means the sea is not merely swimmable but comfortable enough to stay in for long stretches.

The reference point is this: international sources place the lower limit for comfortable swimming at 20 °C. Along the Side and Alanya coast, the sea does not drop below that threshold between May and December. October, in other words, does not sit at the edge of the season but squarely in the middle of it.

The most persuasive comparison is the following: in the final days of October the sea is around 24 °C, and that figure is higher than the 21.4 °C average of May, the month in which the season opens. Even the coolest day of October corresponds to a warmer sea than an average day in May. This is also why the region's golden beaches are far quieter in these months.

Simple physics lies behind this. The sea releases the heat it has stored over the summer far more slowly than the land does. While the land cools noticeably by mid-October, the water continues to carry the accumulation of the previous three months. For this reason the most comfortable hours for swimming are late morning and the first half of the afternoon, when the difference between air and water is at its smallest.

Summer in the First Half, Mild Autumn in the Second

Describing October through a single average would be misleading, because the month changes markedly within itself. On 1 October the daytime temperature is 29 °C, the night 17 °C and the sea around 27 °C. In practice these are the readings of a September day, and the poolside and beach programme continues in its summer rhythm.

By 31 October the picture softens: 23 °C during the day, 13 °C at night and a sea of around 24 °C. The days are still ample for sea and sun, while the evenings turn cool enough to call for a light extra layer. The first half of the month is summer extended; the second half offers the most elegant autumn days the Mediterranean has to give.

The transition from September to October is gradual as well. September daytime readings of 31.7 °C ease towards the 27 °C band over the course of October, and then to 23 °C. The temperature does not fall overnight; the coast changes its character across several weeks. This gentle transition makes October particularly suitable for guests who find the height of summer tiring.

This distinction shapes the choice of dates directly. If the priority is long hours in the sea, the first two weeks are the right call. If the priority is calm, comfortable sightseeing and a gentler pace, the final two weeks deliver exactly that. Rain, Sunshine and Shorter Days

The possibility of rain in October should not be dismissed, but neither should it be overstated. The month records an average of 4.9 rainy days, which amounts to roughly one sixth of it. The remaining days correspond to a sunny or partly cloudy Mediterranean day.

The likelihood of rain increases as the month progresses: it stands at 9 per cent at the start and rises to 18 per cent towards the end. In this region rainfall usually arrives as short, heavy showers rather than closing in for a whole day. Skies clearing after an hour of downpour is the familiar behaviour of a Mediterranean autumn.

The variable that genuinely warrants attention is day length. On 1 October the day lasts 11 hours and 49 minutes, falling to 10 hours and 41 minutes on 31 October. Day trips and evening plans therefore need to be brought forward somewhat. On the other hand, earlier sunset times make it easier to enjoy Antalya's romantic sunset spots before dinner.

What to Wear in Antalya in October

Daytimes call for summer clothing. An average of 27 °C and 7.5 hours of sunshine a day are more than enough for linen shirts, light dresses and shorts. Swimwear and beachwear remain fixtures of the suitcase; the sea stays usable throughout the month.

Evenings require one extra layer. With a night-time average of 15.9 °C, a light cardigan, a thin jacket or a long-sleeved top provides sufficient comfort for dinner and the open-air programme that follows. It is worth allowing for nights that can drop as low as 13 °C in the second half of the month.

For guests planning visits to archaeological sites and city centres, we recommend a comfortable pair of walking shoes and a light raincoat or a folding umbrella. In October all of this fits into a small suitcase; the month itself calls for nothing in the way of heavy winter clothing.

Cooler Evenings: Regional Differences and Comfort Within the Hotel

A Door to Culture Opened by Cooler Air

The most tangible gain of October is that archaeological sites can be visited in comfort during daylight hours. Aspendos and Side, demanding under the midday sun of high summer, become an entirely different experience at an average of 27 °C. Aspendos remains open until 19:00 on the summer schedule until the end of October; in November that hour moves back to 17:30.

The ancient city of Side lies within walking distance of our Sidemarin hotel, and in cooler air the walk along the colonnaded street reaches its finest form of the year. Aspendos is approximately 35 kilometres from the Side area. Day-trip routes also become easier in October. Manavgat Waterfall, the Green Canyon boat tour, the Dim River and Dim Cave and Alanya Castle and the Red Tower are all visited with fewer crowds in this period. The narrow streets of Kaleici in central Antalya offer the same advantage.

The routes favoured by families with children also become more manageable at this time of year. Close to Okurcalar, Sealanya Dolphinpark offers a far more comfortable day for children once the heat has eased. Side and central Alanya are 64-66 kilometres apart, roughly 1 hour and 9 minutes, while Okurcalar and central Antalya are 103 kilometres apart, roughly 1 hour and 34 minutes. Given the shorter days, these distances call for choosing a single destination and planning the return before dinner.

Is Antalya Worth Visiting in October?

The data points in a single direction. The sea does not fall below 24 °C at any point in the month, daytimes hold an average of 27 °C, the sun shines for 7.5 hours a day and rainfall remains at half the November figure. Add to that quieter resorts and a more flexible pace, and October emerges as the most balanced month of the season.

October is a month that widens the experience rather than narrowing it.
